Creating employment is not as easy as making ‘pakodas’

Santosh Nair

Creating employment is undoubtedly one of the most crucial activities which call for immediate intervention from the government.

All forms of evading or deferment will be detrimental to its popularity and could impact the vote share.

Addressing the issue of unemployment calls for greater insight into the crux of the problem.

Investments are scarce to come and so are businesses to grow. Investment is backed by savings that are inadequate and hence does not provide the stimulus for employment.

Stringent employment laws need to be retained. Retrenchment of the work force by identifying excessive manpower should be curbed. Manpower requirement is subject to proper planning and does not hinge on the business interest of the organization.  Employers like King Fisher, Mahindra tech need tougher legislation in order to protect the interest of its employees.

It is imperative to align training to the needs of the industry.  Education could add value to your being but employability is something that provides you a job. There is a mismatch between qualification and skills. While it is essential to qualify based on one’s skills it is crucial for businesses to work more closely with training institutes to assess and hire relevant skills.

Reservations have dented our capability to engage the right candidate for the job. Albeit the same being prevalent only in government sectors, the impact is felt everywhere transcending all barriers across the spectrum. It is obnoxious at this time and age to hire people based on religion and caste without considering their competence.

Only a growing economy can cater to a growing population. An impetus to growth can be factored in only through economic reforms that have a bearing on the weaker sections of the people. Increase in the population should be deemed as the country’s strength and not its weakness. Despite the emphasis on industrialization, the avenues for employment are meager!!

The cottage and small industries were replenished by large business houses. Their products had a mammoth cost advantage both in terms of machinery used and manpower unused. Many of the artisans were rendered jobless.

Agriculture is a seasonal occupation and hence employment too is seasonal. A substantial part of the population is agriculture dependent and would have to look elsewhere for the rest of the time. A whopping 40% of cultivable land lack irrigation facilities as a result of which only one crop can be grown in a year. The farming population thus have to move on to cities during such times.

India’s huge diversity and climatic variations have an impact on the mobility of labour. Bonding with one’s family is paramount and hence greater priority is accorded to the same. Immobility also marginally accounts for unemployment.

Employment is mandatory and an inescapable duty of the ruling dispensation. It has the potential to lead to the lawlessness that could mar the existing peace and harmony!!

NIA to file chargesheet in Kashmir alleged funding next week

According to court sources, during the in-camera proceedings, the National Investigation Agency told Additional Sessions, Judge Tarun Sherawat, that the final report in the case will be filed next week.

The NIA on Friday told a court here that it will file a charge-sheet next week in the case of alleged funding in the Kashmir Valley as a court extended till January 18 the judicial custody of seven Kashmiri separatists and a businessman.

“The investigation of the case is at concluding stage and the evidence on record is being summed up,” NIA said.

The agency urged the court to extend the judicial custody of the eight accused for another seven days. The court did so, via video conferencing.

The eight have been charged with receiving funds from across the border to fuel unrest in Jammu and Kashmir.

On July 24, 2017, the NIA arrested seven of them — Aftab Hilali Shah alias Shahid-ul-Islam, Ayaz Akbar Khandey, Farooq Ahmad Dar alias Bitta Karate, Nayeem Khan, Altaf Ahmad Shah, Raja Mehrajuddin Kalwal and Bashir Ahmad Bhat alias Peer Saifullah — on charges of criminal conspiracy and waging war against India.

Islam is a close aide of Hurriyat (M) chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. Khandey is the spokesperson for the Geelani-led Hurriyat.

Businessman Zahoor Ahmad Shah Watali, accused of acting as an alleged conduit for channelling funds in the Kashmir Valley, was arrested on August 17 last year.
