The government is struggling to meet its fiscal deficit target of 3.4% of GDP for the year. With Income Tax and GST collections expected to fall short of budgeted amounts and the disinvestment numbers only being achieved only because of one PSU buying the other and also the government forcing the RBI to give huge dividends to it. Amidst all this and to put further strain on our fiscal position, Rahul Gandhi has announced an audacious minimum income guarantee scheme of ₹ 12,000 per person per month and is set to cover 25 crore Indians, costing the government a total of ₹ 3.6 lakh crore. With the government treasury nearly empty, to add further strain and to give out such massive election goodies with the aim to garner votes seems unreasonable. But, then again, Rahul Gandhi is part of the opposition and he can recklessly announce schemes to lure voters as he does not have any responsibility to run the government.

It is a well known fact that countries such as China and Russia are known to meddle in the elections of other countries in order to install a puppet government of their choice. China has been doing it rampantly in Africa and Russia has done it in the USA elections of 2016. It has happened in India as well, when dummy charitable institutions were used to divert funds illegally. This source has been plugged by the BJP which shut down 30,000 bogus NGO’s and have amended various acts and have informed various agencies to keep a strict vigil. While social media is the new threat to elections, it is the deployment of foreign funds into elections that is the real threat to the country’s democracy. We discuss some ways in which one can illegally route money through foreign and deploy it for funding elections and also some safeguards against such dubious methods.
