Hyderabad: Congress President Rahul Gandhi will address two public meetings in Telangana on Saturday in the run-up to the December 7 assembly elections, party sources said Friday. According to Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee official spokesperson Shravan Dasoju, Rahul Gandhi would address a public meeting at Bhainsa town of Adilabad district and another one in Kamareddy. “He will be coming to Bhainsa from Nanded in Maharashtra. After the public meetings, he will be reaching Hyderabad and hoist the Congress flag near Charminar here and address the gathering on the occasion of Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Yatra commemoration day,” he said.

Former Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh K Rosaiah will be conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Yatra commemoration award, the party had earlier announced. This is the Congress president’s first visit after the Election Commission announced the schedule for the Assembly polls in the state. The Election Commission (EC) had on October 6 announced the election schedule for five states, including Telangana, which will go to the polls on December 7. The Telangana Assembly was dissolved on September 6.

The Congress party is currently holding discussions with Telugu Desam Party, CPI and Telangana Jana Samithi on seat sharing. The trio in principle agreed to forge an alliance with the Congress to counter the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti. Seat-sharing issues are expected to be resolved and the list of candidates is expected to be announced after Rahul Gandhi’s visit, party sources said.

Hyderabad| The Congress Saturday released its third list of 13 candidates, including former PCC president Ponnala Lakshmaiah, for the December 7 Legislative Assembly polls in Telangana.

Lakshmaiah, who also served as a minister in the Congress government in undivided Andhra Pradesh till 2014, had failed to find the berth in the previous lists.

Lakshmaiah would contest from his Jangaon assembly segment. It was speculated that the Jangaon seat would go to Telangana Jana Samiti (TJS), a partner in the “grand alliance” for the elections.

The alliance comprises Congress, TDP, CPI, and TJS.

As part of the alliance, Congress would contest in 94 assembly segments (out of total 119). With the release of the third list, the party has so far declared candidates for 88 seats.

Meanwhile, TDP has declared Kuna Venkatesh Goud as its nominee from Sanathnagar in Hyderabad. The announcement is bad news for Congress leader Marri Sasidhar Reddy who represented the constituency earlier.

Hyderabad | The Election Commission has reduced the cash expenditure limit of a contesting candidate to Rs 10,000 per day from the earlier Rs 20,000, Telangana Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumar said here on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, he said the EC’s decision was communicated to him on Thursday and the directive will be strictly implemented. The EC has fixed an upper limit of Rs 28 lakh for expenditure of a candidate in the coming Assembly elections in Telangana.

“The cash transaction per day has been reduced to Rs 10,000. It was Rs 20,000 earlier. This will help curb illegal money flow during the elections. We are interacting with Intelligence wing of the Finance Ministry on a regular basis,” he said. On the distribution of money to lure voters during elections, he said civil societies should play a pivotal role in curbing the menace.

The CEO Thursday said the police and Income Tax departments in separate searches seized about Rs 70 crore unaccounted cash on different occasions since the Model Code of Conduct was implemented in the state. Also the Excise and Police sleuths seized liquor worth Rs 6.70 crore, he said.

Replying to a query, he said corporates and firms should declare paid holiday on the poll day to enable their their employees cast votes. “Employees are entitled to vote on that day. Not granting of paid holiday to employees entitled to vote on the date of poll by the employer is against the provision of Representation of People Act. It is a non-cognisable offence,” Rajat Kumar told PTI.

He said permission should be granted to employees to vote in cases in which the firm can not declare a holiday. He said he is writing letters to the CEOs of information technology firms and pharma companies requesting them to campaign for larger turnout of voters on the poll day
