‘The disposal of Baghbadi’s remains has been done and disposed of at Sea’: US Military

Baghdadi has been chased down a dead-end subterranean tunnel under a hideaway in northwest Syria by US special forces

WASHINGTON: A Pentagon source told AFP on Monday, the body of ISIS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was buried at sea by the US military after he killed himself during the weekend raid on his Syrian hideout.

No briefing was extended on where or when the body was disposed, but it paralleled the 2011 sea burial of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden after he was killed in a US special forces raid in Pakistan.

General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff explained, “The disposal of his remains has been done, is complete and was handled appropriately”.

Milley said the burial took place based on standard US military procedures and “In accordance with the law of armed conflict”.

The founder and chief of one of the world’s most brutal and feared terror groups ISIS, designated a terrorist around the world, took his own life with a suicide vest.

In the weekend raid, he had been chased down a dead-end subterranean tunnel under a hideaway in northwest Syria by US special forces.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Baghdadi blew himself in his suicide vest as he was chased to the dead-end of a tunnel by the U.S. service dogs during an American raid in northwest Syria. Trump went on tweeting about the dog and appreciating his efforts in the operation.

The US-led anti-ISIS campaign had tracked him for years, but he remained elusive until the US gained intelligence that pointed them to the site in the Idlib region of Syria, which is dominated by Al-Qaeda-allied groups normally hostile to the Islamic State.
The chairman of the Joint Chief’s of staff said, “There was material taken away. I don’t want to characterize exactly what or how much yet until it gets exploited properly. But as a matter of course, we always do sensitive side exploitation on any objective anywhere to do that. As to whether it was Baghdadi’s headquarters, it was an area in which he was staying on a consistent basis”.
