JNU Alumni Nirmala Sitharaman and Dr S Jaishankar tweet condemning the attack

Vice-president of the students’ union Saket Moon, claimed the crowd was going from room to room “aimlessly attacked students”

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who are alumni of Jawaharlal Nehru University, has condemned the mob attack on students and teachers on campus.

“I have seen pictures of what is happening in JNU. I strongly condemn the violence unambiguously. This is completely against the tradition and culture of the JNU,” Jaishankar tweeted. He has studied an MA in Political Science and an MPhil and Ph.D. in International Relations from JNU.

“These are horrifying pictures from JNU – the place I know and remember was one for vicious debates and views but never violence. I unambiguously condemn the events which happened on Sunday. Our government, irrespective of what has been said the past few weeks, wants universities to be safe spaces for all students,” Sitharaman tweeted.

The JNU administration says the attackers are still on the campus, vandalizing property and attacking people, and the police have been called. The JNUSU has alleged the involvement of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad or ABVP, the student body linked to the BJP and RSS in the attack.

Similarly, the ABVP has alleged that its members were attacked by leftist students. Later on, the police said they held a flag march on the campus and the situation was “under control”. Home ministry sources said Amit Shah has spoken to Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik and a report will be submitted to the ministry.

The JNU management has appealed for calm in a message. “JNU management has called the police to maintain order. Efforts are being made to tackle the wrongdoer,”.

Vice-president of the students’ union Saket Moon, claimed the crowd was going from room to room “aimlessly attacked students”. Through it, security guards remained “silent spectators”.
