15 killed after wall collapsed in Pune’s Kondhwa; rescue operation underway

Pune | At least 15 people died on Saturday after a 60ft wall residential complex wall collapsed in Pune’s Kodhwa area.

According to police, the wall collapsed on the tin sheds that were located adjacent to the commercial complex. The sheds were built by the labourers who were working at the construction site nearby.

According to the initial reports, The deceased included nine men, a woman and four children. However they are yet to be identified. Responding to the incident police officials said, “Rescue personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the fire department are at the site of the accident, searching for people who may be stuck. The 12 to 15-feet-high wall collapsed at around 1:45 am.”

Pune District Collector Naval Kishor Ram said,” The wall collapsed due to heavy rainfall. Negligence of the construction company is coming to light with this incident. Death of 15 people is not a small matter. Mostly were labourers from Bihar&Bengal. Government to provide help to the affected.”

Pune police commissioner K Venkatesham also reached the location were the accident took place. Speaking to reporters he said, “Our team is investigating the reasons behind the incident. Firm action will be taken against those responsible. We will check whether proper permissions were taken and safety measures were followed.”

Mayor of Pune Mukta Tilak, said, “An investigation will be conducted into the incident. We are giving a ‘work stop’ order so that no work can be continued at the construction site here.”

Pune on Friday received its highest rainfall in June since 2010. Till Friday night, Pune received 73.1 millimeters of rain in 24 hours.
