Kashmir: 2 civilians killed, 8 injured in army firing, inquiry ordered

Srinagar, Jan 27: Two civilians were killed and eight others sustained injuries during clashes with the army in Ganapora area of Shopian district, this evening.


Reports said that an army convoy came under the heavy stone pelting at Ganapora area. The army soldiers earlier tried to disperse the mob but later resort to aerial firing in which a youth got killed on the spot while eight others were injured including three seriously injured.


All the injured were shifted to hospital for treatment where one youth succumbed to their injuries. The deceased have been identified as Javid Bhat, Sohul Bhat while third Rayees Wagey is critical.


Right after the incident the district administration ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident to be completed in 20 days.


Besides this, the joint separatist leadership has also called shut down in the Kashmir valley tomorrow against the killings.


Meanwhile, the PRO Defence Srinagar Col Rajesh Kalia said that army convoy was attacked by about 250 stone pelters in which seven army soldiers including a JCO got badly injured and the mob was trying to lynch the army soldiers and snatch their weapons besides attempted to set army vehicles.


He said that to save their lives and vehicles army soldiers opened fire in which 2 civilians got killed.
