Korean activists calls Seoul Peace Prize for PM Modi a ‘disgrace’, holds protest

Seoul | More than 25 civil society groups in South Korea Seoul protested against the Seoul Peace Prize conferred to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and have called it a disgrace citing PM Modi’s role in the 2002 Gujarat Riots.

According to local Korean Newspapers, the Civil society and Human rights activist groups staged a protest on the streets of Seoul stating that Modi doesn’t deserve the prize as “he has a history of being complicit in violence against Muslims in India.”

“Giving Mr. Modi this prize for ‘Modinomics’ is almost equivalent to giving Mr. Chun Doo-hwan a peace prize for Korea’s economic development in the 1980s and the hosting of the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games,” the activist said in a press conference. The groups further added that “Modi’s win is also a disgrace to the past laureates of this prestigious award”.

Earlier to Narendra Modi, the award was conferred to world leaders like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and international relief organizations including Doctors Without Borders.

The Seoul Peace Prize was awarded to PM Modi for “fostering economic growth in the world’s fastest-growing large economy and furthering the development of democracy through anti-corruption and social integration efforts”.
