VP Naidu Rejects Opposition’s “No-Confidence” Motion Against Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Singh

As many as 47 members of parliament from 12 opposition parties had moved the No-Confidence motion against Harivansh Singh after the Sunday’s ruckus

 

New Delhi| Rajya Sabha chairman Vice president Venkaiah Naidu on Monday rejected the No-confidence motion demanded by the opposition MPs against Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh Singh. Naidu cited that the motion was not in a proper format as the reason for rejecting it.

As many as 47 members of parliament from 12 opposition parties had moved the No-Confidence motion against Harivansh Singh after the Sunday’s ruckus while passing the controversial farm bills. Naidu said that the motion requires notice of 14 days and currently inadmissible under the rules.

MPs of MPs from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, DMK, RJD, TRS, NCP, AAP, CPI, CPI (M), JD (S), IUML and Kerala Congress (Mani) signed the no-confidence resolution. They accused the deputy chairman of violating the procedures of the parliament trying to pass the farm bills in haste. They also accused him of ignoring the demands of proper voting.

This is the first instance of a No-Confidence motion being moved against deputy chairman. Harivansh Singh was elected for the post for the second time at the beginning of the Monsoon Session.

Eight opposition MPs Suspended:

Earlier, Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu suspended 8 opposition MPs from the proceedings of the House for a week. He also called some of them by name and asked them to withdraw from the house. The agitated opposition MPs created a ruckus in Rajya Sabha on Sunday against the passing of farmer bills. Some opposition MPs came out in the well. After the completion of the reply of Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, when the process of passing of the bill started, the opposition demanded physical voting.
