Dalit Family’s Fight For Justice In Madhya Pradesh Claims Three Lives

A Dalit family in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar has lost three members in a harassment case, highlighting the disparity between election promises and ground realities. The case began in 2019 when a 15-year-old girl filed a police complaint against Azad Thakur, Vishal Thakur, Pushpendra Thakur, and Chotu Raikwar for harassment and assault. The case, which invoked the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, became politically charged during the 2020 Assembly polls.

After the elections, the accused’s families pressured the woman to withdraw her complaint. When the family refused, a mob killed her 18-year-old brother in August last year, also assaulting her and stripping her mother. Nine people were charged with murder under the SC/ST Act. Two arrests were made, initiating another lengthy legal battle.
