Journalist Attacked By BJP Workers In Amit Shah’s Rally

A 27-year-old journalist from Delhi named Raghav Trivedi was reportedly attacked by individuals said to be affiliated with the BJP party during an election rally for Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Rae Bareli.

Trivedi, who works for a YouTube news channel called ‘Molitics’, said that he was assaulted after asking some attendees about statements made at the rally. Former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel visited Trivedi at the hospital and described the incident as a direct assault on democracy.

Sanjeet Sahni, a cameraman and colleague of Trivedi, filed a complaint leading to the registration of an FIR against six unidentified individuals. The charges include Sections 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the IPC.

Rae Bareli Circle Officer Amit Singh mentioned that an investigation had begun, but as of the evening, no arrests had been made.

According to the report, Trivedi, speaking from the hospital, shared, “I came from Delhi to cover ground reports in Rae Bareli and Amethi. During Shah’s rally, I interviewed women, many of whom stated they were brought to the event by their village pradhan with the promise of a Rs 100 payment. Additionally, I spoke to some individuals who were leaving the rally before it ended. When I asked why, they mentioned they were getting late. Subsequently, I approached local BJP leaders to inquire about these statements.

Trivedi further added, “At first, they denied any wrongdoing. However, when I informed them that I had recorded statements from the women, a group forcibly took me to a secluded area and demanded that I delete the recording. Upon my refusal, they began assaulting me… I begged for help from both the police and bystanders, but no one stepped in… I lost consciousness. Upon regaining consciousness, I found myself in the hospital.”

Well, this is not just it. On April 27, a case was registered against a BJP functionary by Srinagam police Trichy on the charges of assaulting a vernacular daily journalist. The district secretary of the BJP youth wing intercepted the victim. The accused, accompanied by a few unidentified people, attacked the reporter and intimidated him for passing information to the police about sand smuggling activities in Srirangam. Threatening the reporter and his family members of dire consequences, the BJP functionary assaulted the victim, police said.

On the other, on April 10, journalist Nikhil Wagle, a renowned journalist from Maharashtra, was reportedly attacked by BJP workers in Pune while he was en route to attend an event. The BJP workers were apparently upset over Wagle’s comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and LK Advani, particularly after the ruling party patriarch was awarded the Bharat Ratna.

The increasing frequency of attacks on journalists is deeply concerning and threatens press freedom.

Is the fourth pillar of democracy is in danger?
