TMC Tells EC To Stop Violations By BJP

Urgent action is needed as the Trinamool Congress has raised serious concerns about the ‘blatant violations’ of the poll code by the BJP and its leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They argue that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has been transformed into the ‘Modi Code of Conduct.

TMC MPs Sagarika Ghose and Saket Gokhale submitted a letter to the poll panel raising concerns over EC’s alleged inaction against BJP leaders.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) seems to ignore clear violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The letter included “(BJP chief) J.P. Nadda was served notice, but no action has been taken regarding our complaints. Instead, PM Modi has become more emboldened in his remarks. He is making promises he has no right to make during elections, announcing financial schemes that his party cannot enact as the ruling party.

One and a half months into the 18th Lok Sabha elections, since November 13, 2023, the poll body has issued 16 notices and orders for violations of the MCC and electoral laws. The Congress and its leaders have received 6 of these notices, followed by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and BJP with 3 each, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with 2. Additionally, one notice each was issued to the Congress-ruled Karnataka Government and the Telangana Chief Electoral Officer for violations by BRS leader T. Harish Rao, who publicized the Rythu Bandhu scheme during the MCC period.

Mr Ghose said, “Under the watch of the Election Commission, the Model Code of Conduct has now become the Modi Code of Conduct. Any statement made by Mr. Modi goes unchecked, and no action is taken against him. This undermines the fairness of our elections.”

The TMC’s letter to the Election Commission outlines specific instances of alleged violations by the BJP, including false and malicious allegations, appeals for votes based on religion, and divisive statements made by Prime Minister Modi in his rallies.

The letter stated, “The brazen and unabashed comments made by Mr Modi are not only a deliberate attack on our secular republic but also against the ethos of free and fair elections,”.

“Since many of these breaches of the MCC have been committed by Narendra Modi and the ruling BJP, the Election Commission has refused to act strongly on these complaints. Many are compelled to conclude that the MCC has been turned into the Modi Code of Conduct!” The letter detailed instances where the TMC had lodged complaints against the BJP for allegedly violating the MCC and urged the poll panel to take immediate and decisive action.
