Government to Provide wheat at ₹2 and rice at ₹3 Per Kilo to Poor

This will provide help to 80 Crore people including poor, daily wagers and others who lost their job because of the 21-day lockdown. 

New Delhi| Union Minister Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday that the central government will subsidize food items and provide the supplies to the poor.  The government will provide wheat at ₹2/kg and rice at ₹3/kg to the poor and needy families during the lockdown of 21 days.

This will provide help to 80 Crore people including daily wagers and others who lost their job because of the 21-day lockdown.

“Cheap or free ration is being given out. It is the world’s biggest food security system. This will be extended to three months,” Prakash Javadekar said.

He further assured that contractual will get their wages on time. He also announced the recapitalization of regional banks.

As per the announcement by the government, all private and commercial establishments shall remain close with expectations such as essential commodities like food, milk, groceries, and vegetables.

Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had earlier advised the government to pay families of poor and daily wage laborers during the lockdown for survival.

Chidambaram said in a tweet, “For farmers, the government should double the amount paid/payable under PM-KISAN (to ₹12,000) and transfer the additional amount immediately to the bank accounts of beneficiaries. It should bring tenant farmers under PM-KISAN. Take the list from the state governments and transfer ₹12,000 (in two installments) to the bank accounts of each farmer.”

He also advised the government to transfer ₹ 3000 to MGNREGA workers.
