Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy has no cabinet even after a week in the government

The Janata Dal-Secular leader and his deputy from the Congress, G Parameshwara, remain the only members of the cabinet since the grand swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday that segued into the opposition’s anti-BJP unity show.

The delay in cabinet expansion of the Congress-JD(S) alliance government in Karnataka is on account of unresolved issues on the power-sharing arrangement, including the appointment of two deputy chief ministers from the Congress quota.

The coalition partners are unable to agree on an important ministry, finance, sources have said.

With BJP walking out, the Kumaraswamy government easily won the vote of confidence on the floor of the House. But it has been one week since and a couple of visits to Delhi since taking the oath, Kumaraswamy has still not been able to get Congress on board towards getting his full cabinet sworn-in.

Differences over ministries seem to have slowed the whole process down. Sources say except for Public Works Department and Revenue, the Congress wants most of the meaty portfolios – finance, irrigation, rural development, Bengaluru urban development, power, energy, social welfare, health, mines, housing and tourism.
