No stay on implementation of CAA, Supreme Court to hear the matter on January 22

A batch of total 59 petitions against the CAA was filed in the Supreme Court. A Bench headed by CJI SA Bobde, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Surya Kant refused to stay the implementation.

New Delhi| In a big setback to protestors, the Supreme Court has refused to conduct an immediate hearing on the Citizenship Amendment Act. The apex court, however, has set January 22 as the next date of hearing the case.

A batch of total 59 petitions against the CAA was filed in the Supreme Court. A Bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Surya Kant refused to stay the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. The Supreme Court bench said it will hear the pleas in January.

On Monday, the petitioners sought immediate hearing of the case following Sunday night violent clash between Jamia students and Delhi Police. However, CJI SA Bobade said that there will be no hearing on the case unless the violence and rioting stops.
