South Connect: KCR to appeal to voters to support Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is likely to make an appeal to the people of Andhra Pradesh to back YSRCP chief Jaganmohan Reddy in the upcoming Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in the state, in exchange for the latter’s support to the Federal Front. Last month, in a major meeting, KCR deputed his son KT Rama Rao to meet with Jagan. The political leaders in both parties hope that with YRSCP and TRS predicted to win a large chunk of the 25 seats in Andhra Pradesh and 17 seats in Telangana respectively, Jagan joining hands with KCR for the Federal Front could make it formidable, or least give the front significant bargaining power.

South Connect: Rebel congress MLAs return to Bengaluru, claims it was ‘miscommunication’

Putting an end to the political crisis in Karnataka, five rebel MLAs returned back to Bengaluru last night. At least three MLAs have talked to the media and cleared the air over their absence. Talking to ANI Karnataka Congress MLA Mahesh Kumathalli said that he had small issues with Congress leaders and clarified that there was some miscommunication. Mahesh told the news agency that he was unhappy with some party decisions and has added that he had to return back because of the upcoming budget sessions. Another disgruntled Karnataka Congress MLA Umesh Jadhav also accepted that he had small issues with party leaders in his constituency.

South Connect: CM Naidu undertakes day-long strike for special status

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is undertaking a day-long fast in Delhi on Monday, seeking special category status for the state and fulfilment of other commitments made by the Centre at the time of state’s bifurcation. Naidu will begin the ‘Dharma Porata Deeksha’ at the Andhra Pradesh Bhavan at 8 am after paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat. The Telugu Desam Party chief is likely to be joined by his cabinet colleagues, MPs, state legislators, and leaders of students and employees groups and mass organisations. Leaders of various non-Bharatiya Janata Party parties are likely to visit the Andhra Bhavan to express their solidarity with Naidu, the Chief Minister’s Office said. Naidu is expected to address the gathering after his fast ends at 8 pm. The Chief Minister will also submit a memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind on February 12.

Thomas Isaac focuses on rebuilding Kerala during his 10th state budget

Finance minister Thomas Isaac presents his 10th Budget at the State Assembly today. Kerala’s economy took a beating after the floods in August 2018. In fact, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac admitted that the fiscal condition is not looking good as Kerala’s growth will be the lowest in three decades. This condition, the Minister thinks, will continue in the Financial Year 2019-2020 as well, as it cannot curtail its expenditure given that Kerala is yet to fully recover from the aftermath of the floods. However, the Minister maintains an optimistic view and looks towards fiscal consolidation. Pushing for tax revenue growth by around 30% and proper implementation of the GST are what the Finance Ministry hopes will revive the fiscal health of the state
