South Connect : Sabrimala opens door to devotees first time since SC order

Kerala’s Sabarimala temple opens today to devotees for the first time since a Supreme Court order overturned a centuries-old ban on women of menstruating age -between 10 and 50 – from visiting the shrine. On Tuesday, devotees took to the streets to “screen” vehicles and try and block prevent girls and women from proceeding to the hilltop shrine dedicated to the deity Ayyappa. Women were pushed, manhandled and violently turned away from the base camp. Seven protesters were also been arrested amid the protest.
