South Connect: TN sports minister P Balakrishna Reddy resigns after conviction

Hours after Tamil Nadu Youth Welfare and Sports Development Minister P Balakrishna Reddy was convicted in a 1998 case for damaging public properties, he stepped down from his post in what came as an embarrassment for the ruling AIADMK government in the state. The resignation came shortly after Balakrishna Reddy visited the residence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Palaniswami. The special court in Chennai, handling cases against MLAs and MPs, sentenced Balakrishna Reddy to a three-year jail term with a fine of Rs.10,000, paving the way for his disqualification as a member of the legislative assembly.

Tamil Nadu: Speaking to scores of women students at a college in Chennai, Rahul Gandhi who visited the state today, asked questions like “How many times have you seen the Prime Minister of India standing in the middle of 3,000 women like this? How many times have you seen the Prime Minister of India like this, being open to any question from anybody?”. Rahul Gandhi used the almost all-women audience to highlight the lack of women in high-ranking roles, during his speech on the campaign trail for the upcoming lok sabha elections. He promised, if the party came into power in 2019, to solve that. the Congress chief had also promised that 33% of government jobs at all levels will be reserved for women if his party comes to power. The session largely involved the students asking various questions to the Congress president.

South Connect: Pollachi sexual assault case: 4 accused detained under Goondas Act

Tamil Nadu: The police have slapped the provisions of the Goondas Act on the four accused who have been arrested in connection with the Pollachi sexual assault case. Just a day earlier, the Pollachi Magistrate Court had extended the remand for three of the four accused by 15 days. The police is keeping all the four accused in action who had sexually assaulted and extorted other women. According to police, these 4 accused were involved befriending college-going girls online, filming them after they met them in person, and blackmailing them later with the videos for money.
