NCW: Act Against Supriya Shrinate For Remarks On Kangana Ranaut

The National Commission for Women wrote on Monday to the Election Commission of India demanding strict action against the Congress party and its members, Supriya Shrinate and H.S. Ahir. This comes after Shrinate’s account put an objectionable post against Kangana Ranaut. The actress is contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh on BJP ticket.

NCW Chief Rekha Sharma expressed concern over a woman using derogatory language against another woman. Sharma emphasized the need for an apology to Kangana Ranaut and hoped for action from Sonia Gandhi against party leaders. She commended Kangana’s response and highlighted that a complaint had been lodged with the Election Commission.

Shrinate denied involvement, stating that the objectionable post was made by someone who had access to her accounts, and she promptly deleted it upon discovery. She clarified that it originated from a parody account in her name on Twitter (X), which she reported to Twitter as soon as she became aware.

Shrinate’s comment on Instagram on Monday, in Hindi, featured a photograph of Ranaut. It said, “Can someone say what is the going rate in Mandi),” making a reference to the actor and her constituency.

In response to Shrinate, Ranaut emphasized the importance of dignity for every woman. She criticized the Congress for sexualizing the name of a small town, Mandi, simply because it has a young woman candidate. Ranaut condemned the party for exhibiting sexist behaviour.

The comment sparked a political uproar, with the ruling party criticizing the Congress and calling for Shrinate’s removal as the party’s social and digital media head.

On Monday, the National Commission for Women took to X (formerly Twitter), describing the behaviour as “disgraceful” and “intolerable,” stating that it goes “against the dignity of women.”
