SC Addresses Voting Concerns: EVM Cross-Verification Discussed

The Supreme Court today addressed concerns over the secret ballot voting method while hearing petitions advocating for cross-verification of votes cast on Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) with paper slips from the VVPAT system. Justice Sanjiv Khanna highlighted past issues with ballot papers, stating, “We are in our 60s. We all know what happened when there were ballot papers, you may have, but we have not forgotten.” Prashant Bhushan, counsel for one petitioner, discussed how many European countries reverted to paper ballots despite adopting EVMs. He proposed options like providing VVPAT slips directly to voters or modifying the VVPAT design for transparency.
