Goa: Vijai Sardesai Criticizes Government as Unemployment Surges to 8.7%, Double the National Average

Panjim : “Corruption in recruitment ensures only those with money can secure jobs, leaving qualified candidates behind,” stated Vijai Sardesai, leader of the Goa Forward Party, as he criticized the state government for its failure to create opportunities for Goan youth. His comments come amidst alarming unemployment statistics, with Goa’s rate hitting 8.7%, nearly double the national average of 4.5%, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023-24.

The situation is even more troubling for women, who face a staggering unemployment rate of 16.8% compared to the national figure of 4.9%. The state’s labour force participation is also low, at just 39%, trailing the national average of 42.3%.

Goa’s job market is primarily concentrated in the services sector, which employs 55% of the workforce, followed by 30.5% in the secondary sector and 19.7% in agriculture. However, these sectors have been unable to accommodate the increasing number of job seekers, especially among youth and women, leading to heightened frustration.

The unemployment crisis is exacerbated by serious allegations of corruption in public sector hiring. A recent cash-for-jobs scandal has intensified scrutiny on the government, with accusations that government positions are being sold, particularly Lower Division Clerk (LDC) roles.

Sardesai further highlighted the misuse of land allocated for employment generation, pointing to the 50 lakh square metres given to Zuari Agrochemicals, which he claims has been repurposed for luxury housing rather than job creation.

As Goa navigates these pressing challenges, the demand for transparency and accountability in recruitment processes has never been more urgent.
