Kerala Police Search Asianet’s Office Days After Left Report On Sexual Assault On Students

Kerala

Offices of the Asianet news channel in Kerala’s Kozhikode were searched by the police on Sunday, the media company said, two days after members of the student wing of the state’s ruling party took on the channel over a news report on the sexual assault of schoolgirls in the state, reported NDTV.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar slammed the Pinarayi Vijayan government and shared a video of the police action on Twitter.

A group of Students’ Federation of India (SFI) activists allegedly forced their way into the office of the Malayalam news channel Asianet News in Kozhikode on Friday and threatened the staff over the news report telecast, the police said.

A case was registered against around 30 activists of the SFI, the student wing of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M), based on a complaint lodged by the TV channel.

According to the complaint, the SFI activists allegedly entered the office around 8 pm, raising slogans against the news channel after pushing aside the security staff and intimidating its employees, the police said.

CPI(M) sources on Saturday alleged that there was a complaint against the news channel for allegedly creating “fake news” using a minor girl about the alleged sexual assault of over 10 girl students at a school in northern Kerala.

The news channel had run the story as part of its programme last year on the drug menace in the state.

Criticising the SFI action, the Press Club of India urged the Kerala government to launch an investigation into the incident.

Eight opposition parties have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging misuse of central investigation agencies to go after them, amid the political war over the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia, reported NDTV.

The Congress has stayed away from the letter signed by opposition leaders, including Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, West-Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and Delhi CM and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.

Others who have signed the letter are National Conference’s Farooq Abdullah, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, Sena’s Uddav Thackeray, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav.

The Gandhis are being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over alleged money laundering linked to Young Indian’s takeover of Associated Journals Ltd, the company which ran the National Herald newspaper. Both Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi were questioned by the ED last year.

“We hope you would agree that India is still a democratic country. The blatant misuse of central agencies against the members of the opposition appears to suggest that we have transitioned from being a democracy to an autocracy,” the letter said.

“… After a long witch-hunt, Manish Sisodia was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with alleged irregularity without a shred of evidence against him,” the opposition leaders said in the letter to PM Modi.

“Out of the total number of key politicians booked, arrested, raided or interrogated by the investigation agencies under your administration since 2014, the maximum belongs to the opposition. Interestingly, investigation agencies go slow on cases against opposition politicians who join the BJP,” the letter said.
