Big news coming in, the Supreme Court of India has granted bail to two accused in the Bhima Koregaon case, Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira on Friday. A division bench comprising of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Sudhanshu Dhulia heard the bail applications of Gonsalves and Ferreira Gonsalves and Ferreira have been booked since 2018 under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for Maoist links. Gonsalves and Ferreira had approached the apex court for bail after their bail pleas were rejected by the Bombay High Court. The duo argued that the Bombay High Court had denied them bail even though the court had granted bail to co-accused Sudha Bharadwaj. The case for which they were booked pertains to the conference which was held in Shaniwar Wada in Pune to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Koregaon-Bhima. The conference later turned violent, causing the death of a young man and several people were injured. Gonsalves and Ferreira were arrested six-months after the conference. There were other activists too who were arrested along with Gonsalves and Ferreira. Under the directions of the Supreme Court, activist Sudha Bharadwaj, P. Vara Rao and Gautam Navlakha were put on house arrest initially. The conditions under which Gonsalves and Ferreira have been granted bail are that they must not leave the state of Maharatsra until the trials are over and they have to share their live location with the NIA officer. Further they are asked to surrender their passports and they are only allowed to have one mobile phone connection during the trial period.
