On July 11, the Supreme Court declared the extensions granted to Sanjay Kumar Mishra, Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), since November 2021 as illegal. The Court ordered the Centre to appoint a new chief by July 31. However, in a special hearing on July 27, the same Bench extended Mr. Mishra’s tenure until September 15, citing “”public and national interest,”” partially granting the Centre’s plea for continuation until October 15. The Supreme Court said the extension till September 15 in the larger interest of the public and the nation, considering the ongoing FATF peer review and concerns about India’s potential placement on the ‘grey’ list by its neighbors. Initially, the Court questioned the need for such an extension, asking if there were no other competent individuals in the department, subsequently the court accepted the Centre’s request for extending Mishra’s tenure, but for a month less than what was sought. The opposition parties criticized the BJP-led Centre for the extension, alleging it was driven by ulterior political motives to target leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) with false cases, intending to weaken the alliance. The INDIA alliance, consisting of 26 opposition parties, is formed to challenge the ruling BJP unitedly in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Opposition leaders, including MPs from Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Samajwadi Party, and Congress, expressed concerns about the extension, claiming it was an attempt to oblige one person and a conspiracy to trap opposition leaders in false cases. They accused the ED of working as a weapon for the BJP and alleged that it had been used to target governments in Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand to destabilize them and undermine the INDIA alliance. The agency, under Sanjay Kumar Mishra, conducted investigations into several Opposition politicians, including former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and his parliamentarian son Karti, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Karnataka Congress chief D.K. Shivakumar, NCP leader Sharad Pawar, former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, AAP Ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyender Jain, and Tamil Nadu’s influential Minister Senthilbalaji. Now i only want to ask 2 questions to the government 1st is from 140 crore people, do we have 1 person out of 140 crore people who is capable for this job, because we are using 1 man again and again for this job 2nd, is it because you do not want to change this man, because the heads of the government have total influence over his functioning, isn’t that dangerous for democracy.
