The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael M Grossi on Wednesday lauded India’s impeccable contribution as a responsible nuclear power country, particularly highlighting the remarkable development and growth of indigenous Nuclear Power Plants. He acknowledged India’s emerging leadership role to boost the civil nuclear applications for societal benefits of mankind at global level.
During his two day visit in Mumbai, Grossi addressing the luminaries from Department of Atomic Energy (DAW) said, “Nuclear power can play a pivotal role to mitigate the adverse effect of climate change and tremendous potential to achieve the target of net-zero in a sustainable way.” Besides, he also admired the outstanding safety track- record of Indian nuclear power plants, comparable with international benchmarks.’’ He admired India’s effort and contribution towards swift progress in Nuclear Science & Technology.
Grossi held bilateral talks with the Atomic Energy Commission Chairman and Department of Atomic Energy Secretary Dr AK Mohanty related to the advancement in various useful applications of nuclear energy particular in agriculture, health, water treatment and food preservation technology along with importance of nuclear power to generate electricity in a clean and safe way in achieving the target of net-zero. Nuclear power can play a pivotal role to mitigate the adverse effect of climate change and may help to abate carbon emission. While discussing the role of nuclear energy for harnessing peace and development, he was also briefed about the various future technologies and societal applications of nuclear energy, taken up by DAE.
The total Nuclear Power Plants under Operation in India are now 23 and the total installed capacity has been increased to 7480 MW from the existing 6780 MW. Besides, initial fuel loading has also started in 700 MW capacity of unit 4 of KAPP, which is one of the significant milestones towards the criticality of the reactor and subsequent start of power generation.
