The Uttar Pradesh BJP chief, Bhupendra Chaudhary, has submitted a 15-page report analyzing the party’s disappointing performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The report, based on feedback from 40,000 BJP workers across 80 seats, reveals a significant decline in the party’s performance compared to previous elections.
The BJP won only 33 of UP’s 80 Lok Sabha seats, while the opposition INDIA bloc secured 43 seats. The party’s vote share decreased by at least 8% in all six regions of the state. The worst performance was seen in the West and Kashi regions, where the BJP won only eight out of 28 seats.
Key reasons cited for the poor performance include:
- Arbitrariness and high-handedness of officials and administration in the state.
- Dissatisfaction of party workers towards the government.
- Paper leaks in government jobs continuously for the last 6 years.
- The opposition’s issue of the abolition of reservations gained momentum due to the state government giving priority to people of the general category in the recruitment of contract workers for government jobs.
- The Rajput community’s displeasure with the party.
- Statements given by party leaders on changing the Constitution.
- Worker enthusiasm was reduced till the 6th and 7th phases of voting due to early ticket distribution.
- The old pension issue resonated among government officials.
- The Agnipath recruitment scheme for Army personnel became a big issue.
- The names of BJP’s core voters were removed from the voters’ list by election officials at the lower level. In almost all seats, 30,000-40,000 names of the party’s core voters were removed.
The report also noted a decrease in non-Yadav OBC and Dalit vote shares, which contributed to the opposition’s gains. The BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, discussed the report in Delhi.
Despite retaining power nationally with 240 seats, the BJP fell short of the majority mark and had to rely on NDA allies to form the government. The party has acknowledged the need to address these issues and strengthen its position in Uttar Pradesh for future elections.
