Reports: Modi Govt Plans To Curb Waqf Board’s “Unfettered” Powers

The Centre plans to table a bill in the Parliament to curb the powers of the Waqf board, multiple reports said on Sunday. The bill was approved by the Cabinet on Friday and is likely to make more than 40 amendments to the act. The act regulates assets donated by a person who dedicates any property classifed under the Muslim law as charitable or religious. Currently, the Waqf boards are the third largest owner of land after the Indian Armed Forces and the Railways and their share of land has doubled since 2009.
