Additional sessions judge Amitabh Rawat was told by Special public prosecutor Amit Prasad that Khalid has to be confronted with voluminous documentary evidence.
On Monday, Delhi Police sought 10 day day custody of Umar Khalid as they produced him before the Karkardooma district court via video conferencing a day after arresting the activist under the anti-terror law Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for his alleged role in conspiracy of the communal violence that erupted in February in national capital. The court granted a 10-day custody in its order.
Additional sessions judge Amitabh Rawat was told by Special public prosecutor Amit Prasad that Khalid has to be confronted with voluminous documentary evidence.
Trideep Pais, Umar’s Lawyer, told the court the police have to clarify where he gave the speeches and show the proof that his client asked people to come and protest. He added Khalid is against the CAA and he is not ashamed of it.
Sayed Qasim Rasool Ilyas, Umar’s father, has accused the Delhi police of targeting those who participated in the protests against the CAA and NRC.
“This is nothing but an attempt to corner the activists and silence the voices of those who dissent against the government. The Delhi police have been trying to weave a false story by naming few people who participated in the anti-CAA-NRC protests, including Umar, as the ‘masterminds’ behind the north-east [Delhi] violence. However, everyone knows who was actually behind the riots,” he said.
The riots were triggered after two groups of protestors (pro and anti CAA) clashed with each other in Jafrabad area of Delhi in February this year.
The special cell of Delhi Police is investigating a larger conspiracy behind the riots, saying it was planned to create international news on the arrival of the US President Donald Trump in India.
Many other activists including Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal and Fatima Gulfam have been booked under the stringent law. According to the police, Umar has been named by one of the accused in her disclosure.
