China Reports 57 New Cases of Coronavirus, Highest Daily Surge Since April

It is the highest daily surge in the country’s count since April, as the concerns regarding the second wave of the infectious disease continue to grow in the country.

Beijing| On Sunday, China recorded 57 new cases of Covid-19 infections, the highest daily surge in country’s count since April, as the concerns regarding the second wave of the infectious disease continue to grow in the country.

By imposing strict lockdowns earlier this year, China had managed to bring back the domestic outbreak under control. But now the new outbreak has been linked to a meat and vegetable market in south Beijing.

36 of the new cases were domestic infections in the capital, the National Health Commission reported.

According to local health officials, two other domestic infections were reported on Sunday in northeastern Liaoning province, and the infected cases were close contacts of the Beijing cases.

11 residential estates near to the market have been sent under immediate lockdown as a new cluster of domestic infections has come to the light.

these are the first cases in Beijing in two months.

Hundreds of police officers, many wearing masks and gloves, and dozens of paramilitary police were deployed at the market, the AFP reporters reported.

The cases have suddenly raised concerns about the safety of the food supply chain and some other markets in the city have also been closed.

A city-wide food safety inspection focusing on fresh and frozen meat, poultry, and fish in supermarkets, warehouses, and catering services was ordered by Beijing’s market supervision authorities.

Beijing has not only delayed the return of students to primary schools but also nine nearby schools and kindergartens have been closed.

Sporting events, group dining, and cross-provincial tour groups have also been brought to halt.

The rest of the cases amongst the reported were brought in by Chinese nationals returning from other countries.
