Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has taken oath as a member of the MLC after uncertainty over his election to the state legislature.
Mumbai| Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has taken oath on Monday as a member of the Legislative Council after he was elected unopposed to the legislature. Shiv Sena Chief was chosen as the chief minister of Maharashtra in November but he was not a member of either House in the state legislature.
Thackeray was one of the nine candidates belonging to the ruling Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi, an alliance comprising the Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress, and the opposition BJP who were all elected uncontested to the state Legislative Council last week.
The state cabinet had initially suggested that Uddhav Thackeray be chosen by the governor to the Council from his quota. Despite sending two recommendations, the governor did not nominate Uddhav to the Upper House of the legislature and was criticised by the ruling Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) constituents, as per the reports.

CM Uddhav Thackeray then spoke to Prime Minister Modi to seek his intervention.
Uddhav Thackeray’s election was important for him to continue as the chief minister as he had to fulfil the legal requirement of becoming a member of either of the houses before May 27–six months from the day he took the oath as chief minister.
