Chennai Jain Bakery Owner With ‘No Muslim Staff’ Card, Arrested

A popular bakery in Chennai has drawn flak after posting an ad that said that they only have Jain staff and that no Muslim workers had been hired.

Chennai| A bakery named Jain Bakeries and Confectioneries had “No Muslim Staff” written on its poster in bold. This went viral on social media, the bakery has drawn a lot of controversy for stigmatizing Muslim community.

Prasanth, 32, owner of T. Nagar-based Jain Bakeries and Confectioneries, was arrested by the Mambalam police on Saturday on the charge of outraging religious feelings.

He had mentioned ‘Made by Jains on Order, No Muslim Staff’ in an advertisement for his bakery circulated on WhatsApp. Initiating suo motu action, Mambalam police inspector Balamurali arrested Prasanth.

He was charged under Indian Penal Code Sections 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion) and 504 (Whoever intentionally insults, and thereby gives provocation to any person, intending or knowing it to be likely that such provocation will cause him to break the public peace).

However, the Inspector also said that the owner of the bakery is currently out on bail.

The advertisement was circulated by the owner on WhatsApp groups for people belonging to Jain communities, to take orders, as per the police.
