The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in its contribution report submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI) revealed that it had received Rs 785 crore in donations from companies and individuals.
The amount received by the BJP was five times more than what the Congress party got in the same period and topped the charts for the seventh year in a row, according to a report in The Indian Express.

While Congress received Rs 139 crore, the Nationalist Congress Party got Rs 59 crore, Trinamool Congress got Rs 8 crore, Communist Party of India (Marxist) Rs 19.6 crore, and the Communist Party of India Rs 1.9 crore. While contributions to the BJP recorded a 6% rise since 2018-19, Congress’s donations fell from Rs 146.78 crore in 2018-19 to Rs 139.01 crore in 2019-20.
Some of the major donors include companies like BJP MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s Jupiter Capital (Rs 15 crore), the ITC Group (Rs 76 crore), real estate companies Macrotech Developers (Rs 21 crore) and B G Shirke Construction Technology (Rs 35 crore), the Prudent Electoral Trust (Rs 217.75 crore), and Jankalyan Electoral Trust (Rs 45.95 crore).

Major educational institutions that were amongst the BJP’s donors included Mewar University, Delhi (Rs 2 crore), Krishna Institute of Engineering (Rs 10 lakh), G.D. Goenka International School, Surat (Rs 2.5 lakh), Pathania Public School, Rohtak (Rs 2.5 lakh), Little Hearts Convent School, Bhiwani (Rs 21,000), and Allen Career, Kota (Rs 25 lakh).
Several BJP members were also among the party’s prominent donors like Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar who donated Rs 5 lakh, MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar who contributed Rs 2 crore, Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu gave Rs 1.1 crore and Kirron Kher who donated Rs 6.8 lakh. Chairman of the Manipal Global Education Mohandas Pai donated Rs 15 lakh.
The party’s income from electoral bonds is not known yet as it’s yet to submit its annual audit report. The EC has extended the deadline for submission of the annual audit reports for 2019-20 to June 30. The BJP has been the biggest beneficiary of the electoral bonds scheme since its launch in 2018, The Indian Express report stated.
