The Delhi government, after running out of Covaxin stocks, asked private hospitals and nursing homes not to administer Bharat Biotech’s COVID-19 vaccine to those who are coming in for their first jab. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi is set to begin screening of children for the clinical trials of Covaxin, the indigenous Covid-19 vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech and ICMR. AIIMS Delhi will begin the clinical trials of Covaxin on children aged 2-18 after AIIMS Patna, which started the trials recently on children aged between 12 and 18 years. AIIMS Delhi, after getting permission from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), is now starting the screening of children ahead of starting the clinical trials. The drug regulators approval was followed by a recommendation by the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) on May 12.
The trials come in the backdrop of many experts presuming that the third wave of the pandemic will hit the children harder.
Under the mega inoculation plan, more than 23 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far in India. States, however, continue to complain about the shortage of two vaccines being used currently.
The positivity rate has dropped to 6.33 per cent as the country reports a below 10% positivity rate for the 14th consecutive day.
Several states, including Delhi and Maharashtra, have announced cautious measures to “unlock” the Covid-induced lockdown. Other states like Haryana and Sikkim have announced their Covid-induced lockdowns will continue till June 14.
