Supreme Court rejects govt plea to re-verify NRC data

New Delhi | The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Centre and Assam government’s pleas to reopen and re-verify National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

“The National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise won’t be reopened, there shall be no sample re-verification of data. Those born after Dec 3, 2004 won’t be included in NRC if any of the parents is a doubtful voter or declared foreigner by a tribunal or is contesting case,” a Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said.

The court said that the security of this information should be similar to that of the AADHAAR.

“Regime similar to Aadhaar should be created to ensure security of NRC data. Exclusions should be published only online on August 31″, the court said.

Only hard copies of lists of inclusions and exclusions to be provided at district offices. The NRC to be updated according to law laid down in section 66A Judgment,” Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said.

This came after the NRC coordinator sought more time to ensure that draft lists and the list of new names (added after considering exclusion/inclusion) are published.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register containing names of all genuine Indian citizens, which has been updated for Assam, as it suffers from a problem with one of the most number of illegal foreign immigrants.

Watch: Tamil Nadu elderly couple bravely fight back robbers in viral video

TestHostEntry

Tirunelveli | An elderly couple are seen bravely fighting off robbers who tried to choke the man, with plastic furniture in the house. The incident took place around 8 PM on Sunday.

70-year-old Shanmugavel and his wife 65-year-old Senthamarai, were enjoying their daily routine when two robbers come in and try to choke the man.

The wife rushes to his rescue, and grabs slippers kept at the door and starts throwing them one by one at the intruder who was trying to strangle her husband.

Shanmugavel and his wife throw furniture at them – chairs, stools and everything they can find in their vicinity. The couple relentlessly fight the robbers and chase them away.

“We live in a farmhouse at the edge of the village and it is located very close to the forest. It is a five-acre land and we have been here for 40 years. We were acutely aware of the fact that we were susceptible to attacks from robbers because our house was isolated from the rest of the village,” Shanmugavel tells TheNewsMinute.

“When I was getting strangled, I immediately began to make loud noises to get my wife’s attention. I knew it didn’t have to make sense. It just had to bring her to the entrance,” he says.
