Indonesia: 10 dead after 6.4 magnitude earthquake hits Lombok island

Jakarta | A powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia’s Lombok island on Sunday resulted in a death of around 10 people.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake which hit at 6.47 am local time was at depth of seven kilometers. The quake struck 50 km (30 miles) northeast of Lombok’s main city Mataram, away from the main tourist spots, said USGS.

In a released statement, Indonesia disaster mitigation agency has stated that around two dozen people were injured in the earthquake, while one person died in East Lombok and two died in North Lombok.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, IDMA spokesperson further informed that Island authorities have temporarily closed the hiking trails on Mount Rinjani amid fears of landslides after the earthquake. “More than 40 aftershocks have been recorded, However, no tsunami alerts is issued yet, said Hary Tirto Djatmiko, spokesman for Indonesia’s geophysics and meteorology agency

Earlier in 2004, around 220,000 people were killed in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia after a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 9.3 undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, in western Indonesia.
