MK Stalin elected as DMK President ahead of protests by MK Alagiri

Chennai | Karunanidhi’s son MK Stalin on Tuesday was appointed as the new president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Chennai for the post which was held by his father for 49 years.

In a meeting held at the Anna Arivalayam, the party headquarters in Chennai, Stalin was elected as the new chief of the party after 65 district secretaries of the party proposed his name for the party head. Stalin was earlier appointed as the working president of DMK in January 2017 after the deteriorating health condition of Karunanidhi.

After the demise of Karunanidhi on 7 August 2018, Stalin was clearly looked as the new leader of the Southern party. On August 14 meeting of the party workers , senior party leaders urged the ”waiting prince” to lead them. The party leader also elected Durai Murugan as the new treasurer of DMK , the post previously held by Stalin.

Meanwhile, Stalin’s brother MK Alagiri who was expled from DMK for anti party activities opposed Stalin’s leadership. Alagiri while addressing media warned the party of “consequences” if he is not taken back. He said, “Kalaignar is not there now. The party has to be saved and protected. ” However Stalin’s supporters dismissed threats by MK Alagiri calling him ‘rhetoric’.
