Maharashtra Congress leader Amin Patel demands reservation for Muslims

Mumbai | Congress leader and MLA from Mumbai’s Mumbadevi constituency Amin Patel on Friday demanded reservation for the Muslim community in Maharashtra.

“Along with Maratha and Dhangar Samaj, we want the reservation for Muslims too. Muslims are socially and economically backward and fall under Special Backward Category-A, Muslim Reservation (SBCA),” said Patel.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis earlier rejected the demand for the reservation for Muslims on religious grounds citing various Supreme Court and high court rulings while addressing the State legislative assembly that his government had done much more for minorities, especially Muslims, in three-and-a-half years than previous governments.

The previous Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) government in 2014 had granted 5% reservation for the Muslim community

Amin Patel’s statement has come after the recent agitation by the Maratha community demanding reservation in government jobs and education.
