Bhubaneswar: At least 22 people including 10 Police men and two Journalists were injured on Saturday when suspended BJD MLA from Chilika Prasant Jagdev’s vehicle allegedly rammed into the crowd on Saturday. The incident occurred at Banapur in Khurda district, about 100 km from here, police said.
After ramming his car into the crowd which had gathered outside the Banapur BDO’s office when the election for the block chairperson was underway, he was maltreated by a mob, and is critically injured, said police.
At Banapur town police station, a case has been registered against him, under different sections of IPC including attempt to murder, obstructing officers from discharging their duties and causing grievous injury to people, Inspector General Narasingha Bhol said, who had rushed to the cite of incident.
Jagdev is under police custody, and after being discharged from hospital will be arrested. First he was being treated at a local hospital and later he was transferred to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, Khurda district superintendent of police Alekh Chandra Pahi said.
In the incident two persons – the Banapur police station inspector-in-charge RR Sahu and a local woman, were seriously injured. They too were rushed to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, for treatment, officials said. The journalists who were injured were present at the spot.
The IG has said that the matter will be investigated by the DSP rank officer.

This isn’t the first incident involving the MLA, earlier too he was suspended from the party amid attacking on a dalit leader of the opposition BJP. In 206 he was accused of assaulting BJP workers at Manmunda. In 2018 he had attacked a Bolgarh tehsildar and a staff of Chilika Development Authority in 2020.
BJP is demanding a strong action against Prasant Jagdev. Taking to twitter BJP MLA Lalitendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra said, “Shocking display of power & arrogance by BJD MLA! I strongly condemn the brutal act by Chilika MLA Prashant Jagdev who plowed his vehicle into a crowd injuring several people. Strong action should be taken against him as per the law and by the party too.”
