Udupi: Karnataka Hijab Row has become a big controversy. With each rising day, there is a fuss created in the state. 10 to 15 students were protesting outside the Empress College in Tumkur amid the Hijab Row. An FIR has been registered against them. They have been booked for violation of Prohibitory orders that have been imposed around the college.
Amid the row, Muslim male students of Field Marshall KM Cariappa college in Kodagu have boycotted classes, and are saying that they won’t enter the campus until the girls wearing hijab are permitted on the premises. Cops are trying to disperse them from the entrance of the college.
A similar incident is being witnessed at the Milagres college in Udupi. There too Muslim boys have come out in the support of the girls who were not allowed to attend classes wearing hijab. Students are walking out and are saying that college is helpless but at least allowing inside the campus.
At the Shivmogga district, as many as 58 students have been suspended amid holding protests against restrictions on hijab. The students are demanding that the hijab should be allowed inside the classroom. The students said, “Hijab is our right, we will die but not give up the hijab,”
Meanwhile, under Section 144 of CrPC, other protesters have also been booked for violating prohibitory orders. For the last three days, the police and tehsildar have been informing the students about the rules.
Chandini, who has been working as a guest lecturer in a private college, teaching English for the past three years, said the principal summoned her and told her they had received orders that no one should take class wearing hijab or displaying any religious identity. Amid this, she has resigned. However, the college management has refused the charge and has said that there was no such issue.
On the other hand, Hindu boys stopped from entering class with a Tilak, at a govt college in Indi Vijayapura.
“We kept quiet & didn’t protest with a saffron shawl to avoid religious differences, but now they object to wearing kumkum which is integral to our religious practice” has said a Student.
The Hijab row is being heard by the court and the court has stated that the Hijab is not an essential religious practice of Islam. Court has further asked to resume classes without wearing any religious attires.
