Rahul Gandhi, Mohan Bhagwat, JP Nadda In Tamil Nadu For Pongal Celebrations

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attended the popular “Jallikattu” event in Madurai district along with DMK youth leader Udayanidhi Stalin.

As the southern state of Tamil Nadu celebrates its annual harvest festival Pongal over the next four days beginning today, political leaders from across the spectrum have reached the state in the view of the upcoming assembly elections to make their mark.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is in Chennai for a two-day visit. He offered Pongal prayers at the Sri Kadumbadi Chinnamman Temple today n the state capital’s Ponniammanmedu locality.

A press release by RSS said: “During his visit, Bhagwat will participate in…Pongal celebrations. He will meet young professionals and start-up owners and also likely to interact with dignitaries. As per his routine schedule, he will review the organisation’s work with local functionaries.”

Tweeting his customary wishes this morning, PM Modi said: “Pongal greetings to all, especially my Tamil sisters and brothers. This special festival showcases the best of Tamil culture. May we be blessed with good health and success. May this festival also inspire us to live in harmony with nature and further the spirit of compassion.”

BJP President JP Nadda is also scheduled to Tamil Nadu today to attend the Namma Ooru Pongal (Our Village Pongal), a state-wide programme, in Chennai. BJP is not leaving any stone unturned to make its presence felt in the wake of upcoming assembly elections in the state, which it’ll fight along with the AIADMK.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attended the popular “Jallikattu” event in Madurai district along with DMK youth leader Udayanidhi Stalin. The tradition that involves rampaging bulls, was banned by the Supreme Court a few years ago. However, keeping in mind the passionate following it has in the state and considering Tamil sentiments, the centre later legalised the tradition.

At the event, Mr Gandhi said: “It was quite a lovely experience to see Tamil culture, history in action. I’m happy that Jallikattu is being organised in a systematic and safe way that both the bull and the youngsters are safe and everybody is being taken care of.”

“I have come here as I think Tamil culture, language & history are essential for India’s future & need to be respected. I’ve come here to give a message to those who think that they can run roughshod over Tamil people, can push aside Tamil language & Tamil culture,” Rahul Gandhi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
