PM Modi announces ₹10 Lakh relief for the kin of Indians killed in Iraq

Sushma Swaraj, earlier this month told the parliament that the 39 Indians missing in Iraq who were suspected to have been abducted by the ISIS have died.

A day after bringing back the mortal remains of Indians killed in Iraq’s Mosul, Prime Minister Modi has cleared the air around compensation to the victims’ families. Ending the speculations, PM Modi on Tuesday announced the relief of ₹10 Lakh for the families of each of the victim.

The mortal remains of the 38 out of 39 Indians killed in Iraq were brought back to India by Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh. The Indians went missing in Mosul four years back. The plane carrying the mortal remains landed in Amritsar on Monday where Punjab’s Cultural Affairs Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu received them.

Of the total 39 who died, 27 are from Punjab, four from Himachal Pradesh, two from West Bengal and six from Bihar. However, mortal remains of one person could not be brought back as only 70% match was found after DNA test.

Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, earlier this month told the parliament that the 39 Indians missing in Iraq who were suspected to have been abducted by the ISIS have died. The government earlier had denied the reports of their death.
