Congress President Rahul Gandhi will contest from Kerala’s Wayanad, the party announced on Sunday. The party has already declared his candidature from his traditional seat in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi. Now, he will be contesting on another seat that is Wayanad. Interestingly, there had been speculations that Rahul Gandhi may contest from Kerala as the party has good backing there. “All southern states requested the Congress president to contest from their states. After enough deliberations he decided to contest from Wayanad, which shares its borders with two other states, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu,” said senior Congress leader AK Antony at a press conference in New Delhi.
earlier, Kerala state Congress unit has urged party national president Rahul Gandhi that he should contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections from Wayanad constituency. As Congress national leadership in Delhi indicated that Gandhi is seriously considering Wayanad, the party leaders in Kerala are excited. Congress-led UDF convener Benny Behanan said a formal announcement would come soon. While speaking to reporters in Pathanamthitta district, AICC General Secretary Oommen Chandy earlier today said there is a demand from party leaders that Gandhi should contest from any of the South Indian Lok Sabha seats and added that “we have requested Gandhi to contest from Wayanad seat.”
