Saudi Arabia Normalizes ‘Normal’ Things

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has garnered attention for its endeavours to normalize what many would consider ordinary in other parts of the world. Traditionally known for its strict social and religious controls, the kingdom, under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is undergoing a significant transformation.

One of the most groundbreaking changes has been lifting the ban on women driving. This move has been a revolutionary step toward gender equality, affording women a newfound sense of freedom and mobility. Alongside this, the country has embraced mixed-gender events, challenging the conservative norms that have long governed social interactions.

The entertainment landscape in Saudi Arabia has expanded with the reopening of cinemas. In 2018, the kingdom abolished the cinema ban, and the screening of ‘Black Panther’ marked a historic return of films to Saudi Arabian screens. Riyadh plans to develop its entertainment industry further by opening more than 300 cinemas by 2030, providing its citizens with the joy of the big screen.

Notably, the once unimaginable inclusion of alcohol in the equation is another sign of changing times. Strict alcohol prohibitions have been a hallmark of Saudi Arabia, but the recent decision to allow non-Muslim diplomats to purchase alcohol reflects a shift in policy.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been a critical driver of these changes, aiming to modernize the country and open it up to the world. His initiatives include loosening restrictions on women’s rights, allowing them to drive, attend sporting events and concerts alongside men, and apply for passports without male guardian consent.

Saudi Arabia has also hosted various cultural events, such as operas, professional wrestling matches, Formula One Grand Prix, and film festivals. The defanging of the Islamic religious police further underscores the commitment to creating a more open and tolerant society.

In a move to diversify its economic base beyond oil exports, Saudi Arabia has embraced tourism. Foreign visitors are now welcome to explore the kingdom, and the “white oil” initiative aims to turn 50 islands and locations in the Red Sea into luxurious resorts, inviting the world to discover Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage.

Overall, Saudi Arabia is redefining gender norms, fostering an environment where men and women can socialize in public areas. The once-traditional image of the kingdom is giving way to a new era of openness, modernity, and cultural vibrancy.
