‘Killing Research Culture..’: Duty On Chemicals Goes Up to 150%

In the 2024 Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman raised customs duty on laboratory chemicals from 10% to 150%. Researchers are facing higher costs, with one faculty member noting that their annual spend on chemicals would now be ₹1.5 crore, up from ₹45-50 lakh.  “They are destroying the research culture in the country with their thoughtless actions.”, said another.
