West Bengal’s prisons face an unprecedented crisis with alarming overcrowding, reaching 1.3 times their capacity, as reported by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The Prison Statistics in India-2022 reveals that, against a capacity of 19,556 males and 1,920 females, the state accommodated 26,994 males, 1,778 females, and 17 transgenders as of December 21, 2021.
