Coronavirus Hits Google, Sundar Pichai Says Slower Hiring

Google parent Alphabet Inc. is significantly slowing hiring for the rest of the year: Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai.

New Delhi| As the whole world fights COVID-19 pandemic, Google parent Alphabet Inc. says it will slow hiring for the rest of 2020.

According to an email sent by the multinational technology company to its employees, the Alphabet will adjust its investments in areas like data centres and marketing.

In an internal memo, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai said, “We’ll be slowing down the pace of hiring while maintaining momentum in a small number of strategic areas, and onboarding the many people who’ve been hired but haven’t started yet.”

Last month, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated the company will contribute over $800 million to help small and medium businesses (SMBs), health organisations, governments and health workers on the frontline of global coronavirus pandemic.

In the internal memo, Pichai wrote that the company hired 20,000 employees in 2019 and had intended to do the same this year. It has onboarded 4,000 new employees yet and a thousand more are scheduled to onboard soon.

According to Business Insider, Microsoft is also “temporarily pausing recruitment” for some roles.
