Dharavi Model Of Tackling Coronavirus Praised By WHO Chief

Despite the coronavirus cases crossing 8 lakh mark on Friday, India’s recovery rate is 63%. The important reason behind that is the steps taken to effectively limit and contain the outbreak in critical points.

Geneva| Although the coronavirus cases in India continue to surge at an alarming rate on a daily basis, with more than 27,114 people testing positive for the deadly Covid-19 virus in the past 24 hours, India’s recovery rate has been comparatively better than other countries.

Despite the coronavirus cases crossing 8 lakh mark on Friday, India’s recovery rate is 63%. The important reason behind that is the steps taken to effectively limit and contain the outbreak in critical points across the country, especially in densely-populated pockets, such as slums and resettlement colonies.

One such example is Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum, with over 10 lakh people residing in the slums. The Maharashtra state government’s and central government’s efforts to contain the spread in this area has garnered praises from the World Health Organisation (WHO), with the chief of international nodal health agency citing Dharavi as an example of how the virus can be brought under control.

“Today the world recorded 12 million cases. In the last six weeks cases have more than doubled. (But) there are many examples from around the world that have shown that even if the outbreak is very intense, it can still be brought back under control. And some of these examples are Italy, Spain and South Korea, and even in Dharavi – a densely packed area in the megacity of Mumbai – a strong focus on community engagement and the basics of testing, tracing, isolating and treating all those that are sick is key to breaking the chains of transmission and suppressing the virus,” Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO chief said on Friday in a press briefing.

Aditya Thackeray, the minister in Maharashtra cabinet and son of CM Uddhav Thackeray applauded BMC and residents of Dharavi after the WHO praised Dharavi’s recovery.

Thackeray, on Twitter, said, “This is huge for our very own Dharavi that has chased the virus. The state government and BMC teams, along with NGOs, elected representatives and most importantly, Dharavikars! Let’s keep this going! Thank you WHO for recognising their efforts, and will keep going on.”
