Former Secretary-General of United Nations Kofi Annan, passes away at 80

Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations passed away today on Saturday. He was 80 years of age. An official statement was issued on Annan’s Twitter that read, “It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness.”

The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize served in the capacity of the U.S. special envoy to Syria and was the first ever black African to be appointed as the General Secretary. He had served 2 terms in that designation from the year 1996 to the year 2006.

It was in the year 2016 that Mr. Annan was nominated by the government of Myanmar to head a panel so as to look for “lasting solutions” to the conflict prevailing in Rakhine state, where a group of human rights have planted extensive abuses against the Rohingya Muslims.

The statement also stated, “His wife Nane and their children Ama, Kojo and Nina were by his side during his last days”.
