Hamid Karzai, Former Afghan President, Meets Taliban Leader For Talks

Taliban commander and senior leader of the Haqqani Network terrorist group, Anas Haqqani, has met former Afghan President Hamid Karzai for talks.

Amid efforts by the Taliban to set up a government, a Taliban official on Wednesday said that a Taliban commander and senior leader of the Haqqani Network terrorist group, Anas Haqqani, has met former Afghan President Hamid Karzai for talks, Reuters reported.

Abdullah Abdullah, the old government’s main peace envoy, accompanied Karzai in the meeting, the Taliban official said, declining to be identified. He gave no more details.

Afganistan’s TV channel TOLONews reported: “Photos: Anas Haqqani, a member of the Taliban’s political office, met with Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah in Kabul today, sources said.”

Haqqani network has been an important part of the Islamic movement, which captured the capital, Kabul, on Sunday. Based on the border with Pakistan, Haqqani network has been accused over recent years of some of the most deadly terrorist attacks in Afghanistan.
