Ivanka Trump’s Comment On 15-Year Old From Gurugram Cycling 1200 KMs Carrying Father Sparks Outrage

Ivanka Trump termed it a “Beautiful Feat”. Not only this, but she also thinks that Jyoti’s endurance has captured the “imagination of the cycling federation”.

New Delhi| Romanticizing the poverty or the plight of the poor in developing part of the world is not new for the West. This was displayed today by none other than US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump.

Ivanka Trump today tweeted about the news of 15-year old Jyoti Kumari who was cycling 1200 KMs from Gurugram to Darbhanga in Bihar carrying her injured father. Due to lockdown thousands of migrant workers in India have been forced to walk thousands of kilometres in the summer heat. Desperate to reach their hometowns the stranded migrant workers are travelling through Trucks, Dumpers and cycles and even DCMs. In the last month there have been many instances of these migrant workers dying in the road accidents or being run over by speeding car or train.

The plight of the migrant workers trying to reach their homes has been extensively highlighted in national and international media as well. A few days ago, the 15-year old cycling her father to Bihar caught the attention of the nation. Jyoti and her father lived in Gurugram in Haryana. Her father Mohan Paswan was injured in an accident and was not able to cycle himself. On May 10, Jyoti left along with her father from Gurugram on a bicycle for Darbhanga. She arrived home on May 16.

The news has exposed the lack of facilities made for migrants. However, instead of empathizing with the plight, Ivanka termed it a “Beautiful Feat”. Not only this, but she also thinks that Jyoti’s endurance has captured the “imagination of the cycling federation”. She tweeted, “15 yr old Jyoti Kumari, carried her wounded father to their home village on the back of her bicycle covering +1,200 km over 7 days. This beautiful feat of endurance & love has captured the imagination of the Indian people and the cycling federation!”

Her tweet did not go down well with Indians who pointed out the flaws in glorifying the plight of the migrant workers in India.
